Experiencing the Sacred in Greece
by Iven Lourie

I have returned to Greece two times since my first visit. In 1972, I stayed with my Greek friend, Yorgos, in his home; steeped myself in the island culture of Mykonos; hitchhiked and bussed through the Peloponnese; visited archaeological sites all over Greece, including the Palace of Minos in Iraklion, Crete. That travel was truly transformational for me.
I was seeking sacred spaces, especially temples and shrines, but I was also primed to love Greece from childhood--I had read The Iliad and The Odyssey "for boys" when I was 10 or 12 years old, and that awakened in me a yearning for those magical seas of the Aegean.
