The Institute: A Community in the Sierra Foothills
by Iven Lourie

Several decades ago, an intentional community, The Institute for short, came into being in urban Los Angeles and thrived both there and at its headquarters in Crestline, California, in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Some years later, The Institute moved its offices and activities to Northern California, to the foothills of Nevada County.

The Institute was founded by E. J. Gold, an author, artist, and spiritual teacher who is known--especially on the West Coast--as a Teacher's Teacher and "Upaya Master" (master of skillful means).

He is the originator of many techniques and new applications of ancient and traditional spiritual teachings. (His best known book is The American Book of the Dead , which just came out in its 30 th Anniversary Edition.)
